Will Amazon Sword Plants grow well in an aquarium with a sand bed?

I'm just getting to the substrate in a 60 gallon aquarium I'm going to be running for a breeding tank for Angelfish. Will Amazon Sword Plants grow well in sand? Also, how do make one Amazon Sword Plant into 2? I've heard of splitting them but I'm not sure how that works or when you know it's time.
